The high-touch surfaces every London office should prioritise

How often should each touch point be cleaned?
Frequency is where most office cleaning specifications fall short. The standard "nightly clean" model — favoured for decades because it kept cleaners out of sight — does not match the rhythm of viral and bacterial transmission, which happens during the working day. A practical rule of thumb is to schedule against tier rather than against time of day:
- Tier 1 surfaces: a minimum of twice during occupied hours, plus a thorough clean at end of day. Reception areas with heavy visitor footfall — common in central London — often justify hourly attention during peak periods.
- Tier 2 surfaces: once daily as part of the standard service, with an additional pass during illness outbreaks or after large meetings.

Choosing the right disinfectants: BS EN 1276 and BS EN 14476
A touch point clean is only as effective as the chemistry behind it. The two British Standards that matter most in a commercial office context are:
- BS EN 1276 — the bactericidal standard. A product certified to BS EN 1276 has been laboratory-proven to reduce relevant bacteria, including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA, by 99.999% within five minutes of contact. This is the baseline you want for kitchens, washrooms and food-contact surfaces.
- BS EN 14476 — the virucidal standard. Certification confirms efficacy against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses including influenza A, adenovirus and norovirus. During flu season or a confirmed outbreak, an EN 14476-certified product on Tier 1 surfaces is non-negotiable.
Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are not effective against norovirus. During an outbreak, soap-and-water hand washing combined with EN 14476-certified surface disinfection is the only reliable approach.
Always check the contact time printed on the label. A wipe that needs four minutes of wet contact to deliver its claimed kill rate will not work if it is sprayed and immediately buffed dry. Train cleaning operatives — and any staff using cleaning stations — to apply, leave and only then remove residues.
Building a touch point cleaning programme for your London office
A good programme is not a longer checklist; it is a small number of habits that get done reliably. We recommend five components.
1. Map your building

5. Communicate with occupants
Discreet signage in lifts and washrooms — "this surface was last disinfected at..." — reassures occupants and visibly raises the standard. It also tells staff that the lid being lifted on the bin or the kettle being wiped is part of a deliberate, well-managed regime, not an afterthought.
Common mistakes to avoid

- Spraying disinfectant onto a cloth, then onto the surface. This dilutes contact time and concentration. Spray the surface, leave for the full dwell time, then wipe.
- Cleaning with a soiled cloth. Once a microfibre is visibly grey, it is moving contamination, not removing it. Replace cloths between zones, not between buildings.
- Forgetting the underside. Door handles, desk grips and chair armrests collect more residue on the underside than the top. A two-second wipe of the underside doubles the value of the clean.
